This is another one of our own Master violins from Select Violins. The Masters Series was specially commissioned for Select Violins. The violins in the Masters Series are comparable to : Shar’s Collector’s Series or the upper end Scott Cao violins.
The excellent quality of this violin is very apparent in the many photos below. It has a most interesting two-piece back. This Cannon has striking flaming in all of the maple. Notice the high-quality, hand-applied oil varnish. The fine artistry of this lovely violin is clearly evident in every detail. But the beautiful craftsmanship is not just on the outside--the inside work is also done to perfection. Everything is neat and impeccable. The crisp, clean lines of this instrument declare that this is truly the work of master craftsmen.
This violin was crafted for Select Violins in China. In recent years, that country has become a formidable player in the world of string instrument construction. The Chinese have been winning numerous contests in violin making. Last year at the Violin Society of America, Chinese contestants won the gold and silver medal awards, and four of the 12 competitors given certificates-of-merit were Chinese. Chinese luthiers have prevailed at the show since 2004.
The tone of this Select Masters Series - 1743 Cannon is no surprise. As one would expect fine craftsmanship has produced a violin that sounds as beautiful as it looks. It is delightfully well-balanced, even, and has a warm, bright tone. Nice dynamic range, too. Set up with Vision strings.
Interesting Old German made Violin from the late 19th to early 20th Century.
Total length 23 1/2 inches - 597 mm.
Body length 14 1/4 inches - 362 mm.
Upper bout 6 1/2 inches - 165 mm.
Lower bout 8 1/16 inches - 205 mm.
Grand old violin with excellent flaming on the ribs, and the great looking scroll. It is properly setup with new Vision strings, new sound post, and bridge. This will make a great “second fiddle” or one for the advancing student. Check it out, this violin is the ideal violin for those less than ideal situations---camping, outdoor performances when the clouds are rolling in, busking, fiddling on the front porch.....
There have been a few minor repairs made to this old instrument. The neck has been re-set. There are two small repaired saddle cracks. The treble side f-hole has had some repair that can be seen in the photos. There is a small chip out of the scroll on the left side. The violin is fully lined but has no corner blocks, like many of the German workshop violins from it’s time period. The dark markings on the top are a little more subdued then what the photos show below.
This interesting old violin has that tone that only comes with age! It has a smooth, bright tone, which is consistently balanced in all the strings. Like many of the older German violins the ease of play is as nice as the tone.
Old Austrian-made Stradivarius violin
Total length 23 1/2 inches - 597 mm.
Body length 14 1/4 inches - 362 mm.
Upper bout 6 3/8 inches - 161 mm.
Lower bout 7 7/8 inches - 200 mm.
Here is a mighty fine fiddle with a rich, red-brown varnish. This Austrian violin is perfect for the student, or it could be a nice “second fiddle”. Take a close look at this one--it may be just what you are looking for. It isn’t a ”fine” violin for the professional environment, but it would be nice for the outdoors and other informal occasions.
The fiddle has been repaired and adjusted for immediate enjoyment. There is a repaired short cross-grain crack in the center, in front of the bridge, and a ”D” shaped repair halfway under the neck in the center of the top. There is also a short crack near the saddle and a chip out of the scroll, plus a few scratches and scuffs. This violin is fully lined, but has no corner blocks, like many workshop violins. All in all, it is in very good shape. Take a close look at the many photos.
This Austrian violin has a nice, aged tone that is full, smooth, and bright. It is consistently balanced in all the strings. It also has a nice clear sound in the upper registers. This violin is easy to play, is well-balanced, and is fairly responsive.
Phenomenal 19th Century German Violin!
Total length 23 1/2 inches - 597 mm.
Body length 14 1/4 inches - 362 mm.
Upper bout 6 5/8 inches - 168 mm.
Lower bout 8 1/8 inches - 207 mm.
What is it that is so phenomenal? This instrument has balanced tone and an amazing-sounding G string. This truly is an excellent sounding German violin. You may have to play a thousand violins before you find another like it. It is also very pleasing to the eye, with its lovely, light brown finish over nicely flamed maple. The two-piece top is also interesting, in that the grain is tight on the treble side and wider on the bass side. It is professionally set up with new Larsen strings, new sound post, and bridge.
There is no label other than a repair label from 1880. The violin does display the characteristics of a workshop violin made in Germany. It has four corner blocks and a real bass bar and nicely graduated plates, the tell-tail signs of one of the higher end workshop violins.
There have been a few minor repairs made to this wonderful old instrument. The top has several repaired cracks that can be seen in the photos below. There are no sound post or bass bar cracks. The back of the scroll has a small rectangular patch under the A peg. The back seam is cleated, but looks perfect. It is missing a small piece of purfling by the neck on the treble side and under the chinrest by the saddle. The finish was probably redone at sometime also. It appears that most of the repairs were made in 1880, judging by the label.
The tone of this violin is truly remarkable. The G string sounds beautiful! It has a very wonderful, rich, deep, projecting sound to it. The amazing thing is that the G string doesn’t stand out over the other strings. The tonal color is balanced and wonderful on all the strings all the way to the upper registers. The tone is not dark or bright, but warm, full, powerful, lovely..... You don’t have to be a Paganini to bring it out either. This violin is easy to play.
Interesting Old Stradivarius Copy.
Total length 23 1/4 inches - 59 mm.
Body length 14 inches - 355 mm.
Upper bout 6 1/2 inches - 165 mm.
Lower bout 8 1/16 inches - 205 mm.
Very dark old violin with excellent flaming on the ribs and back. If you are enchanted by a deep dark finish, take a close look at this interesting old Stradivarius copy. Enjoy the many photos to get a better feel for this intriguing violin. It is properly setup with new Vision strings.
This violin saw some repairs back in 1920, in Spokane, Washington. The back was repaired, one crack on the lower bout, bass side, an inch from the edge, as well as the center seam and button. This repair appears to have been done with a large plate covering the whole bottom. The top has a few minor repaired cracks as well. There is a letter P carved in the bass C rib and the back finish has some clouding in it. Everything has been repaired solidly and has held up for many years. It has a proper bass bar and is fully lined and blocked.
This interesting old violin has that tone that only comes with age! It has an E string that sings with power and projection. The tone is nice and warm though not perfectly balanced, as the E string does stand above the others some.

This lovely, old violin is a beauty to behold. The rich red-brown finish of this German violin gives it a wonderful, warm look. But the voice of this instrument is even richer than its appearance. It’s no wonder that teachers tell their most promising students to look for a good German-made violin like this one.
This violin has no label, but it bears the traits of a late 19th or early 20th Century German workshop model. It has four corner blocks and a proper bass bar and nicely graduated plates, the tell-tail signs of one of the higher-end workshop violins.
There is one long repaired crack on the bass side, from the f-hole following the neck up. There are also three one-inch-or-less repaired cracks--one on either side of the neck and one off the treble side f-hole. Two of the corners are chipped, and there is chip off the edge on the upper bout bass side. There is a “knot” that shows up twice on the ribs on the lower end--these are not cracks. The back, neck and scroll are in very good condition.
The tone is rich, deep, and mellow in the lower strings. The E and A strings are more on the bright side. This violin is set up with Vision strings and ready to be played. Once you hear this wonderful instument, you’ll agree that this lovely old German violin sounds as beautiful as it looks.
